One family’s life forever changed & a loving husband & father

Nestled in the rice fields of the Philippines, the Laniohan family faces the life-inhibiting consequences of blindness until a group of doctors visit the village and give the gift of sight in under five minutes.

Blindness doesn’t only affect the individual who loses his or her sight, it also changes the lives of those who must now care for their blind loved one. This had become the challenging reality for Virgilio, who for the past two years, had been taking care of his wife, Joanaly, after she lost her sight to cataracts.

In addition to his labors in the rice fields, Virgilio took on the work Joanaly could no longer do. He was cooking for the family, working in the garden, and caring for their home and barnyard animals. For Virgilio, ensuring that his family remained whole was his top priority, despite the hardships they faced. Virgilio’s love and compassion for Joanaly only grew stronger, as they dreamed that one day she would be able to see their family again.

THE CONCEPT

What started as a treatment for a feature length documentary took on a life of its own once it was awarded Musicbed’s 2017 Film Initiative. What came of the grant was a short cinematic documentary that pulled on our heart strings.

But, it wasn’t exactly easy getting this project off the ground, even with a grant to jumpstart things. It took some strategic thinking to get more funding.

We started approaching a variety of non-profits to see if they would want to be the brand sponsor of the film. We eventually landed with SEE International who believed in the vision to make a film about Joanaly Laniohan a blind mother of four and her journey to regain her sight.

Emotional, cinematic, and rooted in character, Second Sight is a love letter of hope to the world—a marriage of one family's journey of overcoming blindness, and the people selfless enough to change the families fate.

THE SHOOT

As eyesight fades so do our memories and visual perception of the world. The warming smile of a loved one, the twinkle in your lover’s eyes, the glow as the sun fades on your childhood home. Everything we hold dear, lost, leaving us with vague depictions of once seen. Through our cinematography, we wanted to subtly depict the loss of sight. Using strategic framing, in camera effects and lighting we will be able to create the world in which the viewer can peer into the lens of someone suffering from cataract blindness. Through this, we created beautifully textured images washed in a blur of the dynamic world surrounding.

Framing

Shooting through naturally occurring frames and showcasing vague depictions of characters will place our subjects to sit amongst a wash of texture and blur giving the feeling of lost peripherals and focus.

Vintage Glass & Focus

Vintage anamorphic glass will give us stylized imperfections: textured bokeh, lens distortion, flare, and soft contrast that visually convey an organic feel that will allow our viewer to experience the subtleties of blinding light, mimicking the symptoms of cataract blindness.

Movement

Organic and subtle movement are instilling an intimate and, when necessary, a sometimes claustrophobic atmosphere.

Muted Color

Color is muted and dry for a portion of the film until the ending shot when sight is restored. Subjects framed in strong backlight will appear in silhouette, and textured light enables us to maneuver the camera through an environment similar to that of our most important character.

Casting

This may be the most difficult part in producing the film, because you have to be diligent and borderline ruthless in our casting decisions. We knew we had one shot to tell the most compelling story possible to raise money for the cause. 

So we reached out to a local production company in the Philippines to interview more than 60 potential subjects for this film.  

We wanted to tell a very authentic story and It would have been extremely difficult for a bunch of white foreigners to come into this clinic and these small villages and say, ‘Hey, let us film you.’

But, we also couldn’t risk having the interview not work out, so we compiled an exhaustive list of every subject, listing the pros and cons of their stories.

THE EDIT

When developing our concept, we thought about the people we wanted to connect with. However, chances are, they aren’t going to have the same problems as the people they’ll be donating too.

Of course, there’s always sympathy. It’s the whole reason people are willing to donate. But, if we knew if we could help our audience connect with empathy and make them feel the conflict and struggle, then we are developing a concept that will work.

As far as the point of view of the film, I began to think about how difficult it is to actually put yourself in the shoes of someone who is experiencing blindness. But, you could really put yourself in the shoes of being someone that has to care for someone you love.

That’s the key. Everyone has had to care for someone they love. It’s a near-universal experience. By telling Joanaly’s experience through the experience of her husband, our team was able to create a story that communicates to everyone—not just people who sympathize for blind, but people who can also empathize with the family that’s been affected.
