THE CONCEPT

At the 2020 Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, the world will welcome four new sports – skateboarding, surfing, and sport-climbing – all of which were born from grassroots in individual expression and nonconformity.

World Debut follows the unlikely evolution of these bold outsider sports in parallel with the Olympic Summer Games. We’ll hear stories from athletes, stewards, and fans who worked behind the scenes with the Olympic movement to understand how new sports are accepted into the Games. Through never-before-seen archival footage, and original interviews from the gate-keepers of the Games, the film teaches the outside world what it is like to be integrated and accepted into the world’s most publicized athletic event.

My vision was to utilize some of the most exciting moments in these sports history to guide our audience through the evolution and process of sport selection in the Games; for the audience, they needed to understand why were these new sports selected for Tokyo 2020?

To contextualize the difficulties with bringing culture-based sports into the Olympic Games we leaned into animation, and heart-felt storytelling from the individuals who dedicated the past 20 years to this cause.

Lastly, we wanted to entertain our audiences which for us meant leaning into the raw and gritty aesthetic as well as music that these counter-culture sports embody.

THE SHOOT

We knew from the beginning that we wanted to bring in a lo-fi aesthetic to certain segments that reflect the counter-culture sports. In addition, we broke down our films visual language into four categories as follows:

Interviews

Our sit-down interviews with characters provide the foundation and narrative of the film while weaving together archival/vérité/animated moments. Minimalistic interviews for the officials, and more “free spirited” ones for our athletes.

Animation

2D animation will bring the Olympic process to life in a digestible way. Bold serif typefaces and retro human illustrations will make up for moments we don’t have archive. Exaggerated proportions and unrealistic coloring will replace generic stock photos. Think Mid Century Modern, embracing the color and clean lines of a Keith Haring pattern

Archive

Sourcing content from the IOC Olympic library, athlete videos, and broadcast partners, we’ll bring together iconic moments and never before seen archival footage that walks us through the history of the Olympic Games and the journey of these sports.

Vérité

Footage of key characters at the IOC headquarters, competitions, home, and on the road will all act as building blocks for the arc of the story. We will live in moments that show the rewarding, and often scary, truth of fulfilling your dreams. Additionally, we’ll spend time with our Icons as they shine light on their respective sports and their own personal experiences.

THE EDIT

World Debut provided the most challenge in the editing room. On an extremely compressed timeline we had to start production, and post at the same time. The only way of achieving this was building the right post-production team that could work autonomously, and with an immense amount of trust.

Sure enough, COVID-19 forced us to move our system to a full remote post work flow. This included daily Google Hangout huddles, along with many virtual cutting sessions. Our team wouldn’t have been able to deliver this film, with this type of transition, if it wasn’t for the upfront work of building the right team.

Additionally, we worked diligently on making sure that the integrity of the sport’s attitude was kept to a high standard. That means tone, pacing, and of course music that reflects each sports personality. One of our favorite moments was showing the Rage Against the Machine team a cut of the film, and they immediately came on board to be the intro track of the film.

Lastly, I worked closely with Yuval Haker as the Creative Director. Together, we developed the visual language for our films animation. This process was the secret ingredient for making the film shine.
